Bringing the spirit of punk to the 8Community

Someone that brings a different view or something new that makes us feel alive, like we belong, or gets us lost in the moment. Maybe it’s because that’s exactly what WeAre8 are in the world of social media, and we can relate to an underdog who’s taking on the incumbents.

However, when it comes to disruptors, punk is a little-discussed but undoubtedly important story in doing things differently. A powerful subculture that swept America first and then the world back in the 1970s, with origins in the punk rock music genre, punk is largely characterised by anti-establishment views and non-conformity.

Generating a movement of art, poetry and prose, film and fashion, to name just a few, punk is sometimes seen as representative of the spirit of youth, ‘held together with safety pins’.

Bob Gruen, one of the most well known and respected photographers in Rock and Roll, is the curator of WeAre8’s 8Stage punk takeover on Friday 5th August. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition.

As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the ’70s, Bob toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture.

This Friday, we’re delighted to welcome Bob to the 8Stage to share his passion for punk with our 8Citizens. In an exclusive curated takeover of the stage, Bob will showcase his favourite moments from punk’s history, and a lifetime in the ever-evolving movement of Rock and Roll.

Make sure you don’t miss this exciting exhibition, and the opportunity to explore one of the most recognised youth tribes of its time. All you have to do is download the WeAre8 app now, turn on push notifications, and we’ll keep you up to date with all the latest 8Stage action! 💛
